The elephants in the Louisville Zoo were models for this, including the first baby elephant born at the zoo, Scotty. He was three years old when he died of colic. Elephants seemed a fitting subject because they are intelligent, with a brain structure and complexity similar to that of humans. Their family ties are so strong that they only part due to death or capture. Outside of Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, Elephants appear to be the only species that has rituals for their deceased. And, it's said, that they have inherited memories.
